Cairo and Luxor in 5 Days

After breakfast, head to the Giza Plateau, the true highlight of any visit to Egypt.

Nothing truly prepares you for the first sight of the pyramids. Rising from the desert edge of Cairo, the three great pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure dominate the skyline just as they have for more than 4,500 years.

Your Egyptologist guide will explain how these massive structures were built, how they align almost perfectly with the cardinal points, and what they meant to the ancient Egyptians, who saw them as gateways to eternity.

The Great Pyramid of Khufu, the last remaining Wonder of the Ancient World, originally stood at 147 meters high and remained the tallest man-made structure on Earth for nearly 3,800 years. Standing at its base gives you a powerful sense of the ambition, planning, and organization behind this extraordinary monument.

Nearby, the Sphinx rests, carved from a single limestone ridge. With the body of a lion and the head of a king, it has guarded the plateau for thousands of years. Known in ancient times as Horus of the Horizon, it remains one of Egypt’s most iconic and mysterious symbols.

Continue to the Grand Egyptian Museum, one of the largest archaeological museums in the world. Located near the pyramids, it houses the complete collection of Tutankhamun’s treasures displayed together for the first time, along with thousands of masterpieces, including a colossal statue of Ramses II and the impressive Hanging Obelisk.

With your guide, you will focus on the most important highlights and understand the stories behind the artifacts, not just view them.

Return to your hotel in Cairo in the late afternoon.

Traveler’s Tip

Arrive at the Giza Plateau as early as possible; the morning light on the pyramids is magical, and the site is much quieter before 9:00 AM. Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes for the uneven desert ground, and SPF 50 is your best friend here.

Cairo and Luxor in 5 Days

Cairo is not a city of one story; it is a thousand stories layered across 5,000 years. After breakfast, you move from the pharaonic world into Islamic Cairo, one of the best-preserved medieval cities on Earth.

Begin your morning at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), home to over 50,000 artifacts that tell the story of Egypt across 7,000 years. The highlight is the Royal Mummies Hall, where 22 kings and queens, including Ramses II, Hatshepsut, and Seti I, rest in climate-controlled dignity. Standing face-to-face with pharaohs who ruled Egypt over 3,000 years ago is a moment that stays with you forever.

From the heights of the Cairo Citadel, built by Salah El-Din in 1182 AD as a fortress against the Crusaders, you will enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over Cairo.

Inside stands the magnificent Mohamed Ali Mosque, also known as the Alabaster Mosque, whose Ottoman-inspired domes and marble interior are a masterpiece of Islamic architecture.

Walk Al-Muizz Street, continuously inhabited since the 10th century, which is lined with beautifully preserved Islamic architecture. At its heart is Khan El Khalili, the Middle East's oldest market, a labyrinth of perfume dealers, goldsmiths, spice merchants, and papyrus shops where time moves at its own pace.

In the evening, transfer to Cairo Airport for your short flight to Luxor. As your plane descends over the Nile Valley, you’ll understand why the ancients called this land “the gift of the river.” Upon arrival, check into your Luxor hotel and rest; tomorrow, the Valley of the Kings awaits.

Cairo and Luxor in 5 Days

Welcome to the capital of the Pharaohs, and prepare for a day exploring the world's greatest concentration of ancient monuments. After breakfast, your expert local guide will take you to both the East and West banks of the Nile to discover treasures that showcase Egypt's golden age.

Start on the west bank at the Valley of the Kings, Egypt's royal burial ground for 500 years (1570–1070 BC), where the colors on the walls remain as vibrant as if they were painted yesterday. Descend into ancient tombs carved into the mountainside, where pharaohs such as Seti I and Tutankhamun were buried.

Visit the stunning mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut. The temple is famous for its grand terraces connected by monumental ramps, forming one of the most impressive architectural designs of ancient Egypt. This architectural masterpiece was built in 1479 BC to honor a woman who became pharaoh and ruled Egypt for 22 years.

See the iconic Colossi of Memnon, two massive 18-meter-tall statues of Amenhotep III that have guarded the West Bank since 1350 BC. In Roman times, travelers came from across the empire to hear the northern statue "sing" at dawn, a mysterious acoustic phenomenon.

After lunch on a peaceful Nile island, cross to the East Bank to explore Karnak Temple, the largest religious building ever constructed. Built over 2,000 years, the Great Hypostyle Hall alone features 134 massive columns, each 21 meters high and covered in painted hieroglyphs.

This evening, fly back to Cairo and check into your hotel.

Traveler's Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes and start early to avoid peak heat. If Tutankhamun's tomb is available for entry, it is well worth the additional ticket. The Karnak Sound & Light Show in the evening is available as an optional add-on and is unforgettable.
